Progress Report: CSL Vendors Are Committing to Reduce Their Own Carbon Emissions

On Earth Day, CSL reported progress on an important part of its environmental sustainability plan: getting vendors and suppliers to reduce their own carbon emissions.

Story

CSL buys goods and services from other companies to operate a global business researching and manufacturing medicines and vaccines. Most of CSL’s emissions (85%) come from 42,000 different suppliers, who supply everything from medicine vials and boxes to transportation and professional services.

In 2022, when CSL first shared its carbon emissions targets, the company set a target to have suppliers who produce 67% of its Scope 3 emissions establish their own reduction targets aligned with the Science-Based Targets initiative by 2030. Now, after three of four waves of supplier engagement, CSL calculates that it has reached 50% of the targeted 67%.

CSL intends for suppliers who produce 67% of CSL's Scope 3 emissions to establish their own reduction targets aligned with the Science-Based Targets initiative. CSL has accounted for 50% of the 67% target (based on self-reported data and as published by SBTi).
